The Objective of the FMNF is to restore, preserve and promote Portuguese Railway Heritage, setting the additional objective of promoting rail travel as a means of sustainable, safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly transport.
Furthermore, it is through fulfilment of the latter proposal that the FMNF (www.fmnf.pt) participates in the START project with Local Operation, to be implemented in the National Railway Museum in the city of Entroncamento.
With the aid of state-of-the-art technology, or so-called “Augmented Reality”, and in close collaboration with the Public rail operator in Portugal (CP), we are preparing a service aimed at children in the 1st and 2nd grades of Primary Education. Its principle objective is to promote travel by train during their commute, wherever possible, thus avoiding the use of private cars.
The contents of this programme will function in a virtual context, superimposed over reality, and are being developed in accordance with both the educational curriculum and the children’s ages and interests.
Within a fun and interactive environment, we try to draw children’s attention to the importance of using public transport; or rather, rail travel. As with other initiatives already introduced in Portugal, we hope that the children will help us to drive the message home to adults.
This new service will be available in the National Railway Museum from November 2011.
